Reynesa gathered the patient was quite depressed and noted it was the patient’s birthday. She set out to do something to bring her some joy.
Reynesa was caring for a patient that was very sick and cried often. Reynesa made it a point to talk with the patient to try to get to the core of what was causing the patient’s sadness. Through each interaction with the patient, she learned bit by bit that the patient had lost her daughter in a car accident locally and 2 sisters in the past 2 years. The patient had reported that her other 2 daughters lived out of town and her son was working on the Hope Tower. The patient shared that most days she stayed inside in her pajamas and rarely went anywhere. Reynesa encouraged her to go out and sit on the porch for 30 minutes, that it would be nice for her.
Reynesa gathered the patient was quite depressed and noted it was the patient’s birthday. She set out to do something to bring her some joy. She also recognized that the constant crying was making the patient’s head pain worse and being able to relax and release some serotonin would be good for the patient’s well-being. Reynesa got a card from the manager and had everyone on the unit sign it. Feeling she wanted to do more she went to the gift shop and purchased a balloon to go with the card. While there she saw a teddy bear that would be perfect, so she bought that also. Reynesa delivered the gifts and gathered a group to go and sing happy birthday to the patient even convincing her educator to sing an upbeat version which brought a smile to the patient’s face and her phone camera out. It was great to see this once crying patient smile and look joyful.
When the patient began to receive flowers from her family, she had no room to set them all. Reynesa was there again going above and beyond to bleach down a table once used for PPE to move into her room while the patient was out for a test and arranging her flowers to be displayed nicely for the patient. This patient was very appreciative of the care she received and the extra special above treatment that made her feel truly seen as a person and eased her way during a time when her head pain was making it hard to feel like a person. It is great to see this Reynesa step up and give this compassionate and holistic care to our patient. It is a pleasure to nominate her for the DAISY Award.
