Although the patients and their families typically do not see what goes on behind the red line, they can be confident in knowing that they are well taken care of.
Christa exemplifies a true DAISY Nurse. She is dedicated to patient safety in multiple aspects, including ensuring the process of surgery (instruments, supplies, scheduling, etc.) is followed precisely. Without every step of the process correctly completed, the patient is at risk for complications, infections, and other negative outcomes.
The surgical setting is complex and requires many steps to ensure safe high-quality care. For example, the equipment used is high-tech and not things that most nurses know how to use and troubleshoot. Christa takes the time to learn how to troubleshoot all machines on her unit. Knowing how the machines work is not a requirement of any of the nurses on the unit, but her desire to go above and beyond for the safety of the patient encouraged her to take the extra time to learn the workings of the machine. This has enabled Christa to assist when there have been problems with machines impacting patient care.
Christa consistently provides high-quality and compassionate care. Although the patients and their families typically do not see what goes on behind the red line, they can be confident in knowing that they are well taken care of. She keeps communication with the team and the family open so that everything feels calm and under control. She is professional and uses evidence-based practice to perform her role during the surgery and advocates to ensure the wishes of the patient are understood. She is diverse in her clinical skills and can easily transition into different roles required without hesitation.
Christa is a role model for nurses on this unit and for the community. She mentors through the local Take Stock in Children chapter, bringing that same enthusiasm for showing everyone compassion and respect and instilling it into the next generation.
Christa is always looking to improve the way things are done on this unit to improve the patient experience and patient care. She is actively involved in several committees and excitedly works with other nurse leaders to improve Mariners Hospital, including stepping up to become the new chairperson of the CEN. Christa is truly a DAISY Nurse.
