When the emergent two-year-old was added to the schedule, Kathy stayed well past her shift to help the PACU nurses at a very busy time.
Kathy works in Same Day Surgery and often picks up time on the weekends to cover pre-op staffing for the PACU and OR Holding areas. Eighty percent of Same Day Surgery patients are eye surgery patients, so she is very familiar with them. There was an odd Saturday with seven emergent eye cases on, one being a two-year-old girl. The GOR PACU is not as familiar with eye patients as SDSC is. When the emergent two-year-old was added to the schedule, Kathy stayed well past her shift to help the PACU nurses at a very busy time. By doing this, the PACU nurses could care for two difficult post-op patients and Kathy for the pediatric eye patient. The parents were very happy with her care, and she made them feel at ease. Being that we do not often have pediatric patients either, Kathy was so helpful in gathering supplies too. These little things really make a huge difference when staffing is slim. Not only did Kathy stay to help out her fellow teammates, but she stayed because she knew it was the best thing for the patient. She always delivers quality care with a smile on her face. She makes a difference every day!
