What does it mean to do super-human work? Superhuman beings put others before themselves risking their lives to take care of others in need. Stepping up to make a difference during a once-in-a-hundred-year pandemic, sacrificing your life and your families' lives that you go home to, is a perfect example of the super-human work our 2 East PCU nurses do.

Our 2 East PCU team is made of compassionate and resilient nurses who showed courage and love for their community since the most stressful time of the pandemic, the very beginning. The passion and pride our 2 East nurses have for our patients, families and each other is seen in their ultimate teamwork. The day-to-day, shift-to-shift precision needed to communicate through an N95 tightly fitted mask, a surgical mask, face shield, and bouffant cap, while wearing gowns and gloves is not for the faint of heart.

On behalf of a former patient we took care of on 2 East in March 2020, CP, I nominate our 2 East PCU the “La Jolla Phase I COVID PCU nursing team” for the DAISY Team Award. The DAISY Award recognizes nurses for the super-human work they do for patients and families. CP was our first COVID patient on 2 East PCU that we took care of in March 2020. We took care of him from admission to when he returned to 2 East PCU from the ICU. CP’s condition improved and he was able to discharge. He expressed his gratitude for the professionalism and compassion that nurses on 2 East displayed when taking care of him during the most uncertain and scary time of his life and their lives.

One story that he shares is about when his nurse Ashley spent time with him in his isolated room talking him through a coughing spell and giving him more oxygen so that he could breathe. This was a frightening time for both our patients and our nurses. CP says that he remembers the nurses that took care of him by how they spoke with him so patiently and with the ultimate care. He is full of gratitude and wants to meet with the nurses, RTs, and MDs who saved his life. I hope and pray that we can make this happen. It will be very healing for all involved.

This DAISY Team Award nomination for the Phase I COVID units and specifically 2 East is a gesture of gratitude for all the outstanding work that each team has done over the past 3 years of this pandemic. Specifically, 2 East PCU nurses have been taking care of COVID patients for over 1200 patient days or 40 months. Over this period of time, like CP, there have been countless other patients and families expressing gratitude and recognition for our 2 East PCU nurses and their outstanding teamwork.
