It does not take long to notice that Hassan is a special nurse with a tender heart toward patients, families, and coworkers. Almost daily, I observe Hassan in the EC reaching out to his coworkers to extend his helping hand, interacting with families with a genuinely empathetic ear, or on this occasion - tenderly giving care to a mental health / confused patient. It takes a special nurse to give these patients the sometimes-extra time and energy that they should receive, and I recently saw Hassan do just that.

He was going on 12 hours with this one particular patient; patiently redirecting him, watching out for his safety, and trying to interact and change this man’s difficult demeanor. Even though this gentleman continued to give Hassan a “run for his money”, Nurse Hassan kept his focus on the patient and the patient’s safety and wellbeing. Although the patient was very confused and getting agitated, I heard Hassan continually trying to connect with him on a human and personal level. It was a special moment, and I could tell that Hassan’s heart was showing compassion for this elderly man. I realize these are attributes and behaviors we should all strive to demonstrate when giving care; however, it takes nurses like Hassan that give us that reminder of why we do what we do.
