Donna was the ultimate caregiver and took care of her patient until everything was resolved.
My adult daughter had significant ENT surgery recently. We consider ourselves very fortunate that Donna was her nurse in both pre-op and in recovery. Donna had an amazing, nurse-advocate personality from the start. She did everything she could to make us comfortable and to take care of L from the lab testing thru to the IV insertion. The surgery had a significant delay and she kept her informed throughout the pre-op period. The surgery was completed around 7:30 pm. Approximately an hour later I went to her hospital room to wait for L to be transferred from recovery. Donna took the time to make sure we were able to get in her room and updated me on how she was doing.
At about 9:30 pm, Donna and another nurse brought L to her room and that is where Donna was even more amazing. L was in significant pain post-operatively and Donna was her advocate. The doctor had a pain management plan but when the transfer to the hospital room occurred, all of that care plan dropped and there were no orders. The nursing staff there were indicating that they could give Tylenol which was nowhere near what she needed. Donna stepped in and indicated this was not going to work. Ultimately she ended up contacting the doctor at home so that he could re-initiate the orders to make my daughter comfortable.
Had Donna not stayed with her until this was resolved and she had the appropriate medication, I don't know what we would have done. I'm sure it was a very long day for her because in pre-op we had talked about her starting time but she was with us until 10:30 or 11 pm that night so that my daughter had the care she absolutely needed.
There were other great nurses during her stay, but Donna modeled the empathy and skills we truly needed to resolve the situation - staying with L until the necessary medications were given. The next day, my other daughter and I were leaving the cafeteria and Donna actually saw us and came out to ask how L was doing. That was indeed a connection/interaction that exemplifies the care mission of MCHS.
