It is the rare APRN student, who receives “4-5s” out of 5 starting in their second clinical rotation and continues to excel into the third year with glowing comments from preceptors. Yet, Garrett Chatelain is that APRN student. His experience as a pediatric nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit provided him with a background of knowledge and skills that have only grown during his time in the pediatric nurse practitioner program. While I would love to write more, I would like to share some comments from three pediatric attendings during this past year.

The first is during his Pediatric Emergency Medicine rotation and is consistent with many other evaluations and comments: “Garrett was an exceptional student in the pediatric ED. He functioned at or above the level of many of our pediatric interns. I knew he could be entrusted to accurately assess patients and follow up with families as care in the ED progressed. He was a delight to have on shifts and I lucked out to work with him for many shifts throughout his rotation!”

While another pediatric attending on the Ward Service provided this comment: “Garrett was an absolute pleasure to work with on our inpatient ward service. He demonstrated strong critical thinking skills and was able to see the bigger picture for his patients as he identified discharge planning and barriers we needed to address, which were definitely advanced skills for a student.”

Lastly, from a pediatric attending, who simply wrote “This student is a rising star.” It is without hesitation that I recognize Garrett Chatelain as a DAISY Nurse.
