Getting a cancer diagnosis for your mother starts an overwhelming journey that often leaves you stunned & confused, making navigating the various phases of the treatment plan challenging. Having a nurse like Emma, was invaluable (Department of Radiation Oncology, Galter Lower Concourse), and certainly makes the journey less frightening. She was so informative, always pleasant, and available with a huge welcoming smile. My Mother always looked forward to seeing her on each visit. She was always disappointed if it was Emma’s day off. My family always laughed about that and reminded her that people need days off. The Entire Family also looked forward to seeing her smiling face on each visit.

My mother was full of questions and at times seemed discouraged, but Emma always lifted her spirits and took whatever time was needed to discuss her concerns, answer any questions, talked to her to ensure any side effects were addressed with the doctor, and ALWAYS, called her by name, which made my mother feel so special. It wasn’t just her kindness, but she was very approachable, confident, and knowledgeable. We ever hesitated to ask her about expectations, procedure timing, or any of our many questions.

I remember a specific time when we had a “hiccup” with the transportation service. The Social Worker (also great) wasn’t available, we called Emma for guidance and saw what was able to get the transportation arranged. We were so grateful as we had no idea what to do, but we weren’t shocked when she did. This is a very difficult time, but having caring, compassionate, professional Nurses like Emma, makes the journey that much easier.

My mother has encountered many nurses, Admin Staff & others, but Emma is a true jewel that stood out amongst the rest. She is worthy to be recognized and certainly hope that she receives a deserved, distinguished honor with The DAISY Award. Please let her know, how much my mother and my family appreciate the kind, loving manner in which she treated my Mom. We will never forget her.
