Megan went above and beyond to care for the patient and was a strong advocate for the patient when his pain was not being adequately controlled.
Last night we had a young kid in the EDRU with a severe leg fracture who was in excruciating pain. His physician team was seeing several different patients and not able to have eyes on him at all times to monitor his pain. Megan went above and beyond to care for the patient and was a strong advocate for the patient when his pain was not being adequately controlled. She got him moved to a bed with more monitoring so we could give him stronger medications, advocated for multimodal pain management, and stayed by his side to help him when he was feeling scared and distressed by the level of his pain.

We know from research that patient pain is often underestimated by providers and Megan appropriately raised alarms to make sure that her patient was getting the care he deserved. This is not the first time Megan has gone beyond her duties to help patients in the ED. Megan and I had a patient who did not have electricity at home and was going to be discharged from the ED. She appropriately expressed her concerns, and her experience as a home health worker, to Social Work to try and arrange a better management plan for him. In an overstressed Emergency Department, that has a majority traveling nurses, Megan's commitment to our department, our team and our patients is inspiring and energizing. She makes us all better providers, care givers and advocates for our patients. She makes us believe in the power of medicine and strive for a higher level of care for our patients.
