Jenny showed extreme compassion as she called the leadership team and medical team to get approval to ensure this mom could hold her infant.
Jenny was caring for an infant in the NICU. When the infant's mother came to the NICU to provide care for her infant she was called back to her postpartum room for a procedure. Jenny called me several hours later to inform me as the manager that we had a mom that needed extra support. Jenny shared that this mom just received a life-altering cancer diagnosis and Jenny wanted to know if we could take her infant from the NICU to the mom's room in postpartum before she was transferred to 6 hope.

Jenny was crushed that earlier in the day this mom was about to hold her infant but was called away before the infant was ready to be placed in her arms prior to her procedure. Jenny showed extreme compassion as she called the leadership team and medical team to get approval to ensure this mom could hold her infant. Jenny packed all her equipment and rolled the infant into the mom's room; Jenny even timed this with the infant's feeding schedule to ensure the mom had the ability to participate in the basic care needs of her infant. Jenny did not rush the mom or the time this mom had with her infant. Jenny showed patience, compassion, and family-centered care approach as she spent nearly an hour with the infant and mom.

Jenny came back with a plan on how we can support the mom during this time and continue to allow this mom to visit with her infant. Jenny identified an additional support person for the mother who could visit the unit and the infant as well. I rounded with the mom and she was crying with unsure feelings about what her future looked like but she continued smiling through her tears knowing Jenny and the NICU team made sure she did not miss out on moments with her son.
