Her persistence in getting me transferred saved my life!
I was admitted to East Morgan County Hospital (EMCH) in Brush, CO, with COVID-19 after calling for an ambulance because I was weak and unable to walk. The day following admission, the doctors decided they were going to discharge me to home. I told them I didn’t feel I could care for myself at home in the condition I was in. Shelby Montel has been one of my nurses since about May of 2021. I had to go back to EMCH to get my back dressing changed twice a week and have also been a patient there for IV antibiotics on and off since then. She knows my diagnosis very well. She saw that I was an inpatient and came over for my wound care. When she heard that they were going to send me home, she was adamant with the doctor that I needed to be transferred to a hospital in Denver for a follow-up due to my history. It was discovered at the hospital in Denver, CO, that I had blood clots in my arms and legs. Long story short, if I had not been transferred, they would most likely not have caught the clots, and I could have died. Her persistence in getting me transferred saved my life! She is an excellent nurse, and her compassion and care for her patients goes above and beyond. She highly deserves this award.
