He has been noted to be kind, clear in his instruction and expectations, communicates well, and gives constructive feedback to students.
Ben Waldbaum, CRNA, is deserving of the DAISY Award for Excellence as a Preceptor of the newly established Nurse Anesthesia program. Ben is a CRNA in ACCM, Anesthesia, and Critical Care Medicine at JHH. Ben precepts nearly every day he works and his biggest enjoyment is seeing the students’ professional growth and success. He was one of the first CRNAs to sign up as a primary preceptor, and he has precepted every student in the JHUSON CRNA program to date (19 students). Student evaluations report an enthusiastic and supportive teacher who models excellent anesthesia care to his patients. He has been noted to be kind, clear in his instruction and expectations, communicates well, and gives constructive feedback to students. To support the student’s education, he has developed an evidence-based curriculum that he provides teaching about difficult airway management techniques. This teaching occurs outside and inside the perioperative setting. In addition, he has volunteered his time to teach in simulation activities for the students' benefit.

Ben attended Washington University in St Louis as an undergraduate, graduating with honors. He then began a career in computer science transitioning to healthcare in 2004 when he attended Columbia University School of Nursing, where he graduated with Sigma Theta Tau honors. In 2008 Ben completed his anesthesia training at Case Western/Cleveland Clinic Anesthesia program where he graduated first in his class. After graduation, Ben worked for the VA and came to Johns Hopkins in 2009. In 2013 Ben co-founded the Johns Hopkins Center for Sweat Disorders with Dr. Malcolm Brock and has published several publications related to that (1, 2). He has lectured on thoracic anesthesia, is an expert with fiberoptics, and works with all types of adult anesthesia cases. He has online video content to teach advanced skills and is a highly sought preceptor, especially for learning advanced skills. In 2019 he was awarded the Johns Hopkins Preceptor of the Year award and in 2020 was awarded the Johns Hopkins Hospital Friend of the PACU.
