RN Karen quickly checked for responsiveness, took the lead, and asked people to get the BLS cart, oxygen, and a gurney.
Karen stopped what she was working on and took 54 minutes to assist a patient with her prescription order through Express Scripts. The patient stopped by on Monday and gave a Thank you card to the Dermatologist to give to RN Karen. The Thank you note from the patient read: “I can’t thank you enough for all you did to help me get my prescription. You truly went above & beyond sitting there for 54 minutes answering the same questions over and over! I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate what you did for me!”.
Several days later, RN Karen responded to rapid response in Podiatry, a senior veteran who was in a wheelchair, unresponsive, and incontinent. She rapidly assessed the patient, took vitals and knew this patient needed oxygen and his blood sugar checked. The veteran had a pulse and very low blood pressure. She assisted and helped the Podiatry nurse take care of this veteran; until the rapid response team arrived and she gave report.
Minutes after returning from the first RRT in Podiatry a second rapid response was called overhead near the woman’s locker room in the basement (During the Command Urinalysis/Unit Sweep). An active-duty female appeared to be having a seizure. RN Karen quickly checked for responsiveness, took the lead, and asked people to get the BLS cart, oxygen, and a gurney. RN Karen took the vital signs of the patient and applied an oxygen nasal cannula 4L. When the rapid response team arrived and she gave report.
Once again, minutes after returning from the second RRT, a patient walked up to DERM, who had a procedure done, (a large excision to his scalp), and went to the front desk of Derm. The clinic spoke to the receptionist and stated, “Can someone help me, my scalp is bleeding (a large amount of blood).” RN Karen heard that and quickly escorted the patient to an exam room and held direct pressure on his scalp and called for the patient's Dermatologist. The doctor assessed the patient and RN Karen applied a Kerlex and Coban dressing to stop the bleeding. The patient ambulated out of the clinic. Thank you for your consideration in the matter!
