After that event, the mother came to me shedding tears, and said that “she can’t thank us enough and she owes her son’s life to us, nurses”.
I share an unforgettable moment in my life as a nurse when I was appreciated by a patient. The patient’s parents called us that you can hear by her voice that she is rattled and worried, she told us that her son is having difficulty breathing and they think that he needs emergency dialysis asap. We immediately asked one of our patients to move his session so that we could cater to the one needing emergency dialysis and gladly, he agreed.
We set up the machine and when the patient came, to our surprise, he was suffering from severe difficulty of breathing. We transferred the patient to the HD chair and the team quickly initiated the dialysis set-up. While we were doing the procedures, I noticed the patient’s mother and father crying. We just did our best to initiate the dialysis session as quickly as possible and by God’s grace, within 5 minutes, through the process, we had lessened the fluid from the patient’s body and he felt relief. His oxygen saturation went normal, his breathing rate was normal, and accessory muscles were not used anymore for breathing, vital signs went normal range.
After that event, the mother came to me shedding tears, and said that “she can’t thank us enough and she owes her son’s life to us, nurses”. I acknowledged her for being grateful and said to her that God lent us this life. He only used us nurses to extend the help, it is he whom we should thank. All the glory and praise are lifted to God. At that point in time, it lingers to my mind what my parents told me when I was a kid, “Study hard and always be kind to everyone because God will use you in making this world a better place."
