Staff praises her for her exceptional attributes of empathy, accountability, approachability, compassion, understanding, and kindness that she offers day to day to her patients, families, visitors, and staff.
As our Nurse Manager, she is proactive in providing support to our staff and listens to the needs of our nurses to ensure we have the necessary resources to provide care to our patients. She is always positive, kind, and approachable and is a morale builder.

Meixine, you can tell right off, has a transformational style of Leadership that is transparent and wants to see her staff succeed. As a manager in a jam-packed emergency room, you can see that Meixine takes the time to ensure her team is doing okay. Her vision for the department is Quality Improvement, and she has, in our conversations, embraced Shared Governance as a positive in changing the culture of staff and allowing staff to decide what benefits them by way of their Unit Based Practice Councils. You can always depend on Meixine to follow up on issues and questions, and during Covid and retrieving PPE, I had plenty of questions to ask. She is compassionate with the DEM staff and tries to find solutions that affect their work/life balance.

Meixine supports employee engagement and having staff express their ideas. She is passionate and has presented the Healthy Work Environment to the staff. Once it is up and running, the great possibilities of this program will help our front-line staff. During the busiest of times in the Emergency Room, Meixine has covered breaks for staff, and we joked about how placing IV lines is like riding a bike. She makes herself easily accessible to staff by staying late, working holidays, and even coming in during night shift to assist with the department’s needs.

Meixine, who manages the West portion and Pediatric ER, must toggle back between adults and children. In Pediatrics, she is not only dealing with the patient but fearful family members as well. However, patients and their families can trust that in Meixine’s areas, they are receiving quality care.

I truly believe she deserves this award for her compassion, mutual respect, motivation of staff, and care for the staff under her supervision.

Meixine Song creates an environment of mutual respect and continued professional development with ethical behavior and support to the front-line staff, especially during nursing shortages, by taking the duties of others to reduce staff burnout. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a tremendous toll on nurse managers due to the line staff working in isolation and supervising staff nurses working on the floor. Additionally, trying to complete their supervisory role of staffing, troubleshooting issues in the ED with 55-56 licensed and non-licensed staff members, and caring for patients and families who are devastated from contracting COVD or grieving their family’s loss. Meixine went out of her way and assisted the night shift by modifying her work schedule to assist with patient care and taking the role of a supervisor on the night shift working five days a week.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she dedicated her time to providing the necessary PPEs to our staff and worked diligently and promptly with the supply chain department. Meixine was very empathetic and understanding towards her employees; she modified and arranged for a special schedule for employees who either had caregiver issue or was in school for a nursing career. These modifications resulted in assisting employees with their professional development and growth. Three nursing attendants and one LVN working in the ED became registered nurses. She also unified the nursing attendant group in the emergency department. Meixine created the nursing attendant refresher training and facilitated all logistics to make it successful. She was able to provide examples and scripts to train nursing attendants to better serve our patients and families to provide an exemplary patient experience and care for them with compassion, empathy, dignity, and respect and recognized the team who assisted her with certification and acknowledgments.

Meixine facilitated and promoted staff to be involved and lead shared governance emergency pediatrics unit-based council. She encouraged licensed staff to provide education such as EDAP continuing education classes, and complete unit-based audits to provide quality care to our patients and families in this community. Meixine advocated to care for distressed patients in the pediatrics pod and facilitated a program to assist nurses to feel comfortable to care for the patients who arrive in respiratory distress by initiating “mock practices” program. Meixine also worked with the union and came up with a median and changed the nursing attendant schedule from 8hr five days a week to work two- 12hr and two- 8hr shifts to provide them with three days off. This was a tremendous relief for the nursing attendants as it showed the gratitude and emotional support for the hard work they put in every day.

She is very accessible, available, and responsive to the needs of the employees. She encourages critical thinking and problem-solving for the pediatric pod. Collaborates with front-line staff and shows some initiative in the shared governance model by empowering staff to make decisions for the unit. For example, she facilitates pediatrics unit-based meetings and completes random audits of employee documentation. She offers staff time to complete any task and takes over employee roles in patient care or supervisory roles. She takes constructive criticism well and opens her doors always to take suggestions from front-line staff and promotes a nurse-driven environment. She is humble, ready to learn from line staff, and open to suggestions.

She promotes autonomy and leadership for her employees. She provides opportunities for her employees to learn advanced skills in their role and groom them for any promotions within the organization to make better leaders for the next generation who can raise standards and expectations. For example, she provides an opportunity for her supervising staff nurses to learn advanced supervisor roles by interviewing line staff, staff scheduling, and providing input to promote decision-making abilities. She supports her staff to initiate and complete new projects, for example, an RNIII to do unit-based audits, supply cart, Broselow cart organization, and education in-services to increase quality improvement projects for the department.

She remains very professional and gives credit and recognition for any work a supervisor or a staff member has done for any project or event. She promotes it as a team effort and never as her own work. Staff praises her for her exceptional attributes of empathy, accountability, approachability, compassion, understanding, and kindness that she offers day to day to her patients, families, visitors, and staff. When she walks into work staff knows it’s going to be a good day.

Meixine creates an environment of mutual respect, compassion, & collaboration. When I asked her recently what brings her joy at work, she answered “seeing everyone work together to find solutions to build a stronger team. She has a positive, can-do attitude towards problems, & advocates for patients & staff alike. We learned that Meixine’s superpower is “Advisor”. She listens, identifies commonalities, & offers insight to the team that helps bridge the divide. Meixine is willing to take on difficult or non-glamorous tasks and manages to make them seem fun. She coordinated our recent ER Nurses’ Week by planning, networking, & implementing taco for 450 day & night shift staff. She motivates her team with a shared vision & enthusiasm to achieve better outcomes for themselves & for their patients. Meixine is always accessible to her staff & enhances the image of nursing in the organization. She may have the least operational experience of the team, but she has the most team building & bridge building experience.

Meixine remains very professional & gives credit & recognition for any work a supervisor or a staff member have done for any projects & events.
