If she hadn’t been so helpful and responsive and just plain awesome, it would have been a much more difficult day for our patients not getting optimal care.
I was charging and had to be off the unit for a patient at least 1 hour, leaving 2 relatively young ICU nurses alone. The MICU charge nurse came down to act as a backup while I was gone. 25 minutes after I’d left, one of the other patients tanked, requiring urgent intubation and line placement and my other patient needed blood badly, but I couldn’t go back and 2 RNs couldn’t leave the room to check blood. I called Marie, who was OA that day, and asked if she could go by to check on everyone, be an extra set of hands, and possibly check blood for my patient. She not only went, helped, and made sure everyone was ok, but she also assisted with giving my patient the needed blood and started a new PIV on my patient when her only PIV went bad (we were waiting on a PICC line). She also came down to speak to me in person while I was with my other patient (which stretched to nearly 2 hours of my being off the unit) to make sure I was updated and to see how else she could help make sure our unit was ok and the patients well cared for. If she hadn’t been so helpful and responsive and just plain awesome, it would have been a much more difficult day for our patients not getting optimal care. Marie is always so helpful, kind, and smart and whenever she is here as OA or Bed Czar, we know things will go well. She takes such good care of all of us and is always ready to lend a hand, however she can. We are so blessed to have her and is a true DAISY Nurse. She always finds a way to make things work out and is such a vital part of our team!
