Although I was in dire need of surgery, I was sorry to leave Shantay’s loving care and wished I could take her with me.
I presented myself to the Emergency Room at Profit Road with severe abdominal pain. After only a one-hour wait, I was taken to a bed where I was met by a sweet young nurse named Shantay. She immediately began an IV medication of Tramadol, which eased the pain. Then I was taken for a CT scan of my abdomen. The technician rushed me in there because she told me that the scan needed to be read by 10:00 PM or it wouldn’t be able to be read until the next morning. Soon thereafter, the ER doctor came in to tell me I had appendicitis and needed to have a laparoscopic appendectomy. Since the surgery could not be performed at this facility, I needed to be transported to the main hospital. As I waited, Shantay addressed all of my needs in a caring, compassionate manner, keeping me calm and making sure I was not in pain and sharing stories of her two little girls (twins I think) until I fell asleep around midnight. At 5:00 AM, Shantay awakened me in a very kind manner saying “I’m sorry to have to wake you, but the doctor insists that you get to the hospital now.” At my request, she brought me a toothbrush and toothpaste, then helped me get ready for transport. Although I was in dire need of surgery, I was sorry to leave Shantay’s loving care and wished I could take her with me. It was very obvious how much she loved what she was doing as a nurse in caring for a patient. She truly possesses all of the attributes of a quality nursing professional. I feel blessed to have been in Shantay’s care.
