I had the opportunity to round on a patient on the 8th floor. This gentleman was here with metastatic rectal cancer. Upon entering his room, I could already tell he was uncomfortable, most likely from the pain. We had a good visit and he told me the nurses were working hard to get his pain under control, but he had not been to a point where it was ever tolerable. I rounded on the gentleman the next day and had an opportunity to speak with him again. This time he looked comfortable and was able to really speak with me. I asked him about his pain, and he told me that his nurse had done some research and reached out to his physician to see if they could try a cocktail for him. Something regarding two drugs and the timing of each. He stated that for the first time in years, he was pain-free. He told me that Rachel Chambers was his nurse and that for the first time in all of his medical treatment, someone took the time to listen to him. He said he felt as if she saw him as a person and not just another patient. He went on to tell me that he TRUSTED her and her out of the box thinking to care for him. He asked that I recognize her for what she did, which he said is probably something that is so small to her, but so big to him. Rachel, you have left a forever impact on this patient's life and spirit. Thank you for being his advocate and treating him with your mind and your heart.
