Her kindness provided me with relief and peace of mind.
Shaela was assigned to my husband's care after he had been admitted for an emergent stay. At the time, several days into his stay, the care providers still weren't sure what was causing his debilitating pain. The doctors had conflicting opinions as to what was happening and, consequently, we were left confused. Shaela was patient with me as I asked her clarifying questions and she even took the time to walk me through the anatomy of my husband's problem area. I believe that the time she spent with us helped us make informed decisions and advocate for the care he needed. The direct medical care she provided my husband was gentle and empathetic.

Ultimately, my husband needed emergent surgery. While the surgeon was wonderful, he forgot to give me an estimated time that my husband would be in surgery. I asked several OR nurses who did not have an answer for me before remaining alone in my husband's room waiting for an update. Before Shaela left at the end of her shift, she made sure to check in on me. Realizing how scared I was, she took the time to find out if my husband was still in surgery and was able to tell me when he actually entered the OR. Her kindness provided me with relief and peace of mind.

Later during our stay, Shaela was on duty as the charge nurse. She made sure to check in on us and see how my husband was healing. When I thanked her for the kindness she showed when we were scared, she responded that she was just doing her job. While yes, that's true, Shaela has the true heart of a nurse that makes a difference. Any nurse can carry out medical tasks and treatments, but the good ones--the ones like Shaela--see and respect the humanity of their patients. And that's what makes Shaela an Extraordinary Nurse.

Note: This is Shaela's 2nd DAISY Award!
