I was brought to the SICU following blood clot surgery. Elsie was my nurse. Things started going downhill quickly. Within the hour after surgery, she noticed changes in my foot and the amount of pain I was in. The ICU doctor was called in and she said it was normal. But it wasn't. It was getting worse. Elsie called the surgeon, and he came right back and said I needed to go back into the OR, and I might lose my leg. Elsie stood by me and held my hand and let me squeeze her hand when the pain got unbearable. She calmed me and honestly, I wouldn't have gotten through it without her. I have been hospitalized many times and I have never had a nurse show so much compassion and determination to get me through it as I did with Elsie. She is one special nurse that deserves to be recognized. I will be forever grateful to her.
