He provided encouraging support to the patient by reminding her how happy she will be with her new placement.
Tyron Tiu went above and beyond to build a good rapport with a patient in the ED that had challenging behaviors and that had been in the ED for almost two months due to their behaviors preventing placement. Their budding relationship was evident on the day of the patient's discharge. The team was concerned that the patient would act out and refuse to discharge so there were a lot of contingency plans in place to manage the patient's behaviors. The EMTs arrived to pick up the patient and the patient was refusing to leave until some of her demands were met.

Tyron was not assigned to the patient but heard that the patient was discharging so he came to tell her goodbye. When Tyron entered the room the patient's whole demeanor changed and she was so happy to see him. He willingly agreed to assist the team with the patient's discharge. He provided encouraging support to the patient by reminding her how happy she will be with her new placement. He made her a flower out of the paper towels so she can have a memento from him. The patient wanted to talk to a doctor before she left and Tyron brought her two doctors that came in with the same energy as Tyron. The patient willingly assisted herself to the EMT's gurney and Tyron escorted her to the ambulance.

When I attempted to get Tyron's full name off of his badge so I can recognize him, he told me that it was not necessary because this is what he's supposed to do. Tyron has been instrumental in managing the behaviors of some of the ED's behaviorally challenged patients in the past and I wanted to make sure he is recognized for the compassionate care that he provides to the patients. Thank you Tyron and please continue to shine in your role as an RN!!!
