She staffed the floor for 4 hours and did so with grace and empathy.
Alexandra (she goes by Alex) goes above and beyond for her colleagues every day. She has grown into her role as a leader and SSM is so lucky to have a nurse who gives her all in each role she fills. We in the PCU see her impact the most.
There are many examples of how Alex embodies a DAISY Nurse Leader, however, there is one instance that spoke to the level she was willing to go for her colleagues here in PCU. This week has been so tight on staffing, we were quadrupling patients in PCU on nights and charge had a full assignment. Alex came in at 3 am to help our unit out because she knew her co-workers were struggling. She staffed the floor for 4 hours and did so with grace and empathy. As a supervisor, I think that speaks volumes as to how far she is willing to go to support her team. She advocated for our unit all week to administration to help us keep staff and get bodies on the floor, she pulled all the strings she could all while adapting to covering director responsibilities for her first time.
As a nurse, I have never felt more supported or heard by anyone from a supervisory role in my 3 years of nursing. Her commitment to St. Mary’s Mission is evidenced each day as she works with compassion, respect, and stewardship to cultivate a safe community within critical care here at St. Mary’s. Often, we in the PCU feel like since we are a newly developed unit with a lot of kinks to work out we get left behind, but Alex is an incredible leader whose impact on our unit has been palpable since her transition. She is the epitome of the kind of nurse who practices from her heart.
