Tara would sit and talk him through it and would gently rub his arm or his hair and that calming spirit that she has really helped Dad regulate his breathing.
My father entered the IU Health Tipton Hospital through the emergency room. He was septic, with pneumonia and extremely low blood pressure-in critical condition. He was 95 years old and a very independent man who refused to show weakness or admit that he might need help. Tara had a way of joking with him that would get his focus off his weakening condition and put a sparkle in his eyes. This helped him to trust her and that made his attitude softer. He was also scared and often would get very agitated and had trouble breathing. Tara would sit and talk him through it and would gently rub his arm or his hair and that calming spirit that she has really helped Dad regulate his breathing.

But in addition to taking special care of Dad and making him feel that she had all the time in the world to spend with him, she helped the family too. My brother and I did not realize that Dad had requested a DNR when he entered the hospital. We were alarmed and she took the time to verify the request with Dad, but also spent time with my brother and me, helping us to understand what that meant and what would happen going forward.

Dad stabilized enough to be transferred to a rehab facility, but ultimately his condition deteriorated, and he died in his sleep peacefully. I felt such a connection to Tara and the staff that after he passed, I wanted her to know about Dad and to thank her so much for her care. I know that all nurses do a great job every day with their patients because they have caregivers' hearts, but Tara’s tenderness and care made a difference in my family's lives during one of the most difficult times that we have ever faced. Words cannot truly explain how her kindness toward my father touched us. Thank you.
