Alan is the ultimate professional and caregiver, but has the humor and constant positive attitude that helps any situation be bearable.
Alan has been dedicated to his full-time career at SickKids for over 15 years. He is highly respected by his peers as evidenced in his CSN position. He makes everyone around him a stronger and better nurse. It is truly a privilege to work with him. Alan holds himself to a high professional standard and is respected by his patients and families for the praises he receives. He is an advocate for his patients and their families and is most deserving of this award.

Alan's knowledge of his specialty in Orthopaedics and Otolaryngology and his outstanding communication and presentation skills are exhibited in the education he provides to families, staff, as well as multidisciplinary team members on the unit. Alan is an exceptional leader being detail oriented, highly trained and motivated to always learn more. He takes the time with staff ensuring everyone is informed and is always calm making staff feel at ease in tense situations. He has a wonderful way of making a stressful situation calming.

Alan is flexible in his role of charge nurse being patient when training new nurses and kind and sensitive when managing staff. He is a stunning example of what the nursing profession values and I am honored to call him my colleague. Alan knows what it is like to be a parent. He is a wonderful husband and father to three beautiful children. Alan gets to know his patients individually as well as the families. He dedicates as much time as needed to make his patients and their parents feel comfortable. He educates them and answers questions, he sits with patients to comfort them, playing songs and advocating tirelessly for them and their families. He shows empathy and compassion when dealing with the most difficult situations. Alan is a self-motivated nurse. When he sees a task to be completed, he just runs with it.

Alan knows that he is not just an employee of 5A but a member of the SickKids community. He is always showing flexibility by taking extra admissions when working to ensure his patients don't sit down in the Emergency Department overnight and have a comfortable home on 5A. He is the ultimate professional and caregiver, but has the humor and constant positive attitude that helps any situation be bearable.
