It was quite effective in making my father feel like he had a voice, while also encouraging him to calm down.
Jessica was so positive and thoughtful when working with my 85-year-old father after he had a head injury and fractured spine. He had difficulty accepting some of the information doctors were telling him, but Jessica helped him process the information and put it into perspective. For instance, when he outright rejected the idea of surgery, she helped him see what advantages could be — things he wasn’t able to think about on his own. He didn’t end up needing surgery, but at least he was now willing to listen. She also proactively worked with pharmacy and a few doctors to coordinate his care. Rather than ignoring my father's repeated requests to know things such as when the neurosurgeon would arrive (he’d ask every 20-30 minutes), she’d try to track down info. While that might sound obvious, in the past many nurses just shrug and walk away without seeking answers. My dad was fairly antsy, simply wanting to be discharged immediately and he was anxious about being in the hospital. Jessica exuded peace, though, helping to soothe jangled nerves. She patiently answered the same questions that he repeatedly asked, never revealing signs of impatience. It was quite effective in making my father feel like he had a voice, while also encouraging him to calm down. Soon he didn’t feel it was necessary to keep asking the same questions and could wait for the information to be given to him.
