Veronica’s example of compassion, kindness, and going above creates a positive environment that impacts staff, our patients, and families.
Veronica demonstrates great qualities of going above her normal duties as a nurse. There are multiple times she has bonded with a family and has gone out of her way to make a parent feel cared for and can leave the NICU knowing their baby is being watched carefully by her.
One particular instance that resonates with me is a patient we had: the parents were very young and had no other family support in the area. This mother was traveling back to her home in Arizona, she went into premature labor and delivered her baby early. The parents had no way of staying in the area, so they returned to their home in Arizona. It was difficult to give updates or provide important teaching to the parents when they called, as they were Spanish speaking only. Each time Veronica was on shift, she made sure to be assigned the baby so she could call them with updates and assure the family that their baby was taken care of in their absence. Veronica would speak to the parents and the baby in Spanish. In the days leading up to the baby being discharged, she found out they had minimal supplies for the infant. She felt a strong desire to help this family in any way she could. She mentioned to us on staff that she had some items at home (a car seat and diaper bag) she was going to provide for them as she was no longer using the items.
Veronica also mentioned the needs of the family to her own family and they too wanted to help. On the day of discharge, they were able to go home with a diaper bag full of clothes, a car seat, money for gas and food to get back to Arizona, and a gift card to target for any other items they may need. The mother was so happy and said “it was like having her own baby shower with nurses”. Veronica was able to provide quality discharge teaching assuring the baby would be discharged to a safe environment as well as provide support in a respectful manner to this young mother.
