Alyssa gave me her full undivided attention. She carefully listened and reassured all my fears and worries.
I had my baby a few weeks early, causing us to have a longer stay at the hospital. During my stay, I had Alyssa C. as my nurse for many of those days. Towards the day of my discharge, I started to get in a more depressive state because of the fact that I was leaving and my baby was not. I tend to internalize and not say much, but Alyssa saw right through that act. She was so kind! Once I was able to go down and visit my baby, she was asking how he was and would answer or reassure any questions we had about his condition and next steps.
The day before my discharge I was not doing well at all. It had finally hit me that I was leaving, and my baby was not. Again, I was internalizing and did not have much to say. When Alyssa came in for my checks and pain medicine delivery, she looked at me, walked out, and came back in a few minutes later. When she came back, she went through her check and gave me my meds. She then sat down on the chair next to me and looked right through my soul! She simply said, "are you okay". So simple but so powerful. I broke down and spilled my heart to her. Alyssa gave me her full undivided attention. She carefully listened and reassured all my fears and worries. She made me feel like what I was feeling was appropriate for the scenario and that it's okay to not be okay! The time she took to listen and talk about what was going on, impacted me so much that there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about her kindness!
Alyssa truly made us feel at ease that we were leaving the hospital, but our baby was not. We know he was in good hands and there were no real concerns, but it doesn't change the feeling of horror that a parent feels when leaving without their baby. Alyssa made that horror feel less horrific and more hopeful. She deserves this award for so many reasons. She is the true example of everything a nurse should be. She is a skilled nurse who is good at her job but is also a very compassionate and kind person. There are many skilled nurses in this world, but not all have the kindness that Alyssa has.
