Lauren consistently shows professionalism, and strength, and inspires those around her to perform at their highest level.
This nomination is submitted on behalf of myself and the Magnet Writing Team. Lauren has emerged as an authentic leader and mentor throughout her tenure at North Shore University Hospital. Throughout the past 17 years, Lauren has held numerous leadership positions including Assistant Nurse Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Magnet and Palliative Care, and now serves as the Director of the Magnet Program. Lauren consistently shows professionalism, and strength, and inspires those around her to perform at their highest level.
In 2020, Lauren was chosen for the Magnet Program Director role and quickly set out to action plan for our 2022 re-designation. Lauren had a clear vision and plan for success, one that included inspiring a Magnet Writing team, which had not been the standard practice, consisting of clinical nurses, nurse educators, and nurse leaders to write the NSUH Magnet document. Lauren organized a Magnet Writers workshop, educating her team on how to write to a Magnet standard, ensuring that everyone had the tools they needed. Throughout the writing journey, Lauren fostered an environment of support and guidance, always taking the time for her team, despite numerous competing priorities, such as opening a monoclonal antibody tent to serve the COVID-19 patient population.
With Lauren, you are never made to feel like a burden. She gives you her full attention, listens carefully, and guides you in the best direction. Many of the Magnet Writers and I, felt inspired by her calm demeanor, constant availability, and environment of mutual respect. One Nominator shared that she is always smiling when she collaborates with Lauren and that Lauren uncovers potential in each of us. Another shared how honored she was that Lauren chose her for this Magnet Writing Team and how Lauren is an excellent critical thinker, and problem solver and can guide each of us on the right path to develop and express the true highlights of NSUH.
One writer shared that Lauren took the time to walk her through the writing process step-by-step and even when she had to focus on her family, Lauren took on the rest of her assignment without hesitation. Another reflected on Lauren’s ability to consistently model and support ethical behavior and her way of listening to you when you are with her. Yet another reflected on Lauren’s ability to capture your strengths and assist you in building those qualities. As you can see, Lauren has had a profound impact on her writing team throughout the past two years.
In addition to writing over 80 standards with her writing team, Lauren inspired over 2,000 nurses through her Magnet Merriment Rounds. She rounded throughout NSUH on days, evenings, and night shifts, inspiring, motivating, and exciting our NSUH team. Lauren infused Magnet education in an easy-to-understand way, always connecting with team members and highlighting their greatness. With her ability to naturally empower those around her, clinical nurses, leaders, and interdisciplinary partners felt prepared for our 2022 site visit. Lauren not only worked to prepare NSUH, but she also mentors a team in Germany at the University of Tubingen on their own journey to Magnet designation. During each meeting, she brings her full self and offers tremendous support, breaking down a daunting task into bite-size, easy-to-comprehend pieces. Lauren led NSUH through a successful mock site visit and Magnet site visit in September 2022. She built a robust agenda, coordinated meetings, organized participation and attendance, managed several challenges, and partnered with interdisciplinary leaders throughout NSUH to make these events successful.
Lauren carefully chose clinical nurses and a PCA, across various nursing areas, to serve as Magnet ambassadors. Not only did this experience help to facilitate each site visit, but it also allowed clinical nurses to grow and build confidence through mentorship of Lauren. Lauren strategically navigates leadership in a professional and personal way. She has a strong moral compass and provides deep guidance, constructive feedback, and personal insight. She truly embodies the qualities of an empowering mentor and leader. Lauren has personally helped me grow and develop in more ways than I can share here today. I know that I can be truly successful because I have Lauren in my corner. Lauren is truly made for nursing leadership at NSUH.
