This patient was then able to receive the appropriate care she needed, thanks to Kathryn's assessment skills but also her ability to speak up and advocate for her patient.
Kathryn was already going above and beyond by floating to triage and helping decompress the lobby when she pulled a patient who signed in for not feeling like herself. During Kathryn's assessment, she found the patient's complaints to be very vague and it was difficult to determine her true reason for coming in. Instead of getting frustrated, she continued to ask the patient questions. The patient mentioned a headache and stated that while she was at work, she couldn't understand the agenda. Kathryn stated it wasn't obvious, but she grabbed the stroke packet pictures.
When she asked the patient to name the items on the page, the patient began to cry. It was at that time that Kathryn identified that this patient was here for stroke symptoms and alerted the ER physician. The ER physician came to the bedside and evaluated this patient. He admits that this patient did not present with obvious symptoms and had Kathryn not pressed the way she had and advocated for this patient, he may not have ordered a stroke workup. This patient did however get the workup and her CT scan revealed she had an occlusion of the distal left posterior cerebral artery, possibly acute. This patient was then able to receive the appropriate care she needed, thanks to Kathryn's assessment skills but also her ability to speak up and advocate for her patient.
