I would like to proudly nominate my co-worker for going above and beyond during a surgery call case. During the initial interview with his patient, he discovered that she had been driven to our facility by her elderly mother who was still in the waiting room. It was after midnight and his patient was extremely concerned about her mother. His patient mentioned that her loved one doesn’t see well at night and that she had gotten lost several times recently while trying to navigate in the dark. It also happened to be raining.
Knowing that visitation hours were over and that family would be expected to leave, he reassured his patient that her mother would be fine in the waiting area until after surgery and that right now it was important to focus on taking care of her and then family. His gentle nature was reassuring and the surgery was a success.
After the procedure, he (with the help of a fellow doctor) drove the patient’s mother home in her own car so that she could return to visit her daughter the next day. He also helped her into her home. There were no outside lights and she struggled to find her keys, unlock the door, and find her way inside. He assisted her with the use of his cell phone flashlight until she was safely inside. He then returned to the hospital to get his own car and head home. It was nearly 2 am and he was to be back at 6 am for another call case. His selflessness, exemplary care of the patient and family, and willingness to do what’s right for those he cares for, make him a perfect nominee for this Award. It’s a true honor to work with him!
