Her commitment to caring for this family was phenomenal.
Kathy is very reliable and extremely conscientious. She works very well with her co-workers, and she has a special way with her patients. Kathy does not hesitate to go above and beyond when it is in the best interests of the patient. During a recent snowstorm, Kathy was scheduled to admit a young hospice patient. The patient was to be discharged from the hospital around 10 AM. Kathy went to the home, anticipating the patient’s arrival. The discharge was delayed repeatedly. Kathy did not allow the delays to stop her from instructing and calming the daughter, and in that time, Kathy found that medications were needed in the home for the patient’s comfort, and she secured the orders and medications to be sure that they were in the home in the face of what was now a pending blizzard. Late afternoon the patient still had not left the hospital, and Kathy returned to her home. Later that evening, Kathy received notice that the patient had been discharged and was on her way home. Kathy knew that the patient had complex medical and symptom management needs. She left her home and drove to the patient’s home in the snow, so she could instruct the daughter on the proper care and medication for the patient. Kathy went above and beyond, as she knew the storm was expected to make travel difficult, and the patient would most likely not have a visit the next day. Kathy drove home late at night as the storm swirled around her. Her commitment to caring for this family was phenomenal. She truly made a difference to this patient, who just wanted to get home. The patient died within a day or 2.
