Not many nurses have the ability to fill those shoes, and Barbara overflows them.
Barbara Tarjan is a special kind of nurse. She is one of the ones that comes around and just puts a smile on your face. What is extra special about Barbara is that she works strictly as our bereavement nurse. For those who are unfamiliar with that role, it means she comes into the hospital anytime there is a fetal demise. Whether it is an early loss in the emergency department or a later loss on New Family Center, Barbara is there. She acts as a resource for both the staff and the bereaved parents and families during one of the most vulnerable and devastating times of their lives. Not many nurses have the ability to fill those shoes, and Barbara overflows them. One thing that is unique about my relationship with Barbara is that I have not only had the privilege to work alongside her, but I have been her patient as well. I myself am a bereaved mother, and Barbara was nothing short of amazing when helping me. From the moment I received a terminal diagnosis for my son at 20 weeks, she was there for me. She provided me with resources, answered questions, and provided comfort. Come delivery day, I felt at ease knowing everything was already taken care of so that my delivery could run smoothly. Everything was preplanned, thanks to Barbara, so all I had to focus on was the time with my son before he passed. It is inspiring what Barbara does, and ever since losing my son, I realized the importance of her role, and I strive to be like her. I aim to give every bereaved family the best experience considering the circumstances. I strive to give them full attention, love, respect, and dignity, and most of all, I strive to help them create a memorable experience. After all, the time with us is the only time they have with their babies. I thank Barbara from the bottom of my heart for not only helping me when I was her patient but also for inspiring me to be the best nurse I am today.
