She treated the patient with respect, listened to her concerns and experiences, and treated the patient like a human being, not a number.
Nicole demonstrated empathy and understanding of a patient by comforting the patient when she was very upset. She even went to another unit to console the patient after the patient requested to see her. Nicole listened to the patient's past and her current needs and built a relationship with the patient while she was scared and hospitalized. She immediately began to speak with the patient, acknowledging her experiences and comforting her. She treated the patient with respect, listened to her concerns and experiences, and treated the patient like a human being, not a number. The nurse incorporates others' values and beliefs into patient care as evidenced by listening and consoling and acknowledging the "whole" person, not just the physical diagnosis, but the emotional/mental health of the person. Also, she started out her nursing career by looking at a person's whole self, both mentally and physically, and taking into consideration of the person's past experiences. Nicole is a new nurse, graduating from nursing school in December 2021. She carries herself as an experienced, caring, and a passionate nurse just entering this field. It is so nice to see a new nurse have so much empathy and see her connect to this particular patient who really needed "the nurse she connected with" by her side, listening and consoling the patient. I welcomed her to the nursing career and told her we need more like her.
