This nurse we call our patient whisperer. She is a calming, soothing voice for our patients. She takes it upon herself to be that healing voice for her patients and for her colleagues with confused or agitated patients. She calmly enters the room takes their hand and comforts them. We have had several patients ask for her by name. A couple of weeks ago, she walked her patient several times around the unit during the night with a full assignment. They would go to the different pictures in the hall and stop and talk about the pictures meaning. I was in awe of her for her dedication and commitment to ensuring her patient was comforted not only by what may be ordered but what she can provide in a caring environment. She treats everyone like she is caring for her relative or loved one. This nurse needs to be recognized for the gentle healing touch she provides to all her patients. During nurses' week, we had the blessing of our hands. I wish each nurse can provide their patients with this type of healing, because at the end of the day, each of us will remember that one person who took the time to value our existence.
