Kirsten was attentive during the entire visit. She even put on a playlist of favorite hymns for the patient to help her calm down.
During a difficult trial of void, a patient was upset that she could not void and very upset at the prospect that failing a trial of void would be the new baseline. Her trial of void was over five hours long. Kirsten was attentive during the entire visit. She even put on a playlist of favorite hymns for the patient to help her calm down as it became more evident that she was failing.

Fast forward a few weeks and the patient entered hospice care. The patient's daughter contacted Kirsten via the electronic medical record requesting the playlist of hymns because it was so moving. Now in transitioning to a life eternal the patient's daughter was comforted knowing she could provide some relief to the patient through the playlist that Kirsten provided. Those hymns were from the patient's childhood, and I imagine they gave great comfort during the most difficult time a patient and family can face. The most moving part of this situation was Kirsten's humility. She doesn't know how meaningful this act was to the patient. Kirsten did not hesitate when offering the playlist, she just integrated it as part of the care that we give.

As her coworker, I am very moved by her actions. This helps me to recenter on the aspects often overlooked about holistic care in our busy environment. I know Kirsten balks at recognition, but this situation illustrated the caring and compassionate way Kirsten delivers care. Kirsten should have recognition. It is an example to others of how important we can be to our patients.
