As a result of Dell’s extra mile for C’s pleasure, she came back to being the lighthearted young woman of pre-admit/surgery.
Nurse Dell worked with C while a resident at The Center for Medically Fragile Children where they established a great rapport. When Dell learned C was a patient on 7S she stopped in to say hi, then a couple of days later she was assigned to be our nurse. She instantly re-established the rapport they had at the CMFC. She brought the delight of conspiring to my daughter bringing delight and laughter to her “sadness” of being in the hospital away from the teasing and bantering she gets at Matthew House where she lives. She did this by “whispering” to C a plot to “scare” me with “bugs”. She tried to obtain plastic bugs to put in my cot using personal funds and family members. However, this plan did not work. So, she printed bugs on paper, cut them out on her breaks, discussed the plan with C, and while I slept, she taped the bugs on every surface in my bathroom. So, Sunday morning when I ventured into the bathroom C began to laugh (missing since our days since admission). I saw the bugs and “screamed” increasing C’s delight. I made a big show of the “fear” the bugs caused, creating long bouts of laughter in C. We then conspired to “get Dell back”. I moved the bugs to places and equipment in the room. I also placed many on C’s bed and person prior to Dell coming into the room. Dell responded with the proper “alarm” about the bugs. As a result of Dell’s extra mile for C’s pleasure, she came back to being the lighthearted young woman of pre-admit/surgery. This gave us fodder for many joy-filled conversations. We also plan to use the paper bugs around Matthew House for the delight and entertainment of fellow residents and staff. C is non-verbal with severe cerebral palsy. Laughing is an integral part of her days. Thank you, Dell.
