She alerted me that the room would soon be full of people (14) and they would be doing all types of things to understand my situation, so she wanted to calm my fears.
I was in the hospital for major abdominal surgery to debulk a large sarcoma. Brianna was my nurse for 2 to 3 days after surgery. She took excellent care of all my needs, was attentive to what I needed/asked, and showed great compassion. I developed pulmonary embolisms after surgery and she was tasked with helping me to walk short distances to understand oxygen requirements. She did so willingly and with great care to ensure that nothing bad occurred.
Where Brianna stood out in my opinion was one evening after her shift had ended at 7 PM, she came into the room to tell me that they had called for a Rapid Response Team for me as one of my blood tests indicated issues with my heart. She alerted me that the room would soon be full of people (14) and they would be doing all types of things to understand my situation, so she wanted to calm my fears. She stayed with me throughout the entire process and finally left at about 8 PM; at least one hour after her shift had ended. I thanked her for staying and asked why and her response was “I have been with you for 2 days; I couldn’t not be here when you had a crisis”. She could have easily gone home because my needs were well-covered, but she chose to stay and look after me. To me, that is service above and beyond the call of duty.
