Gaby took the time to explain to A that she is able to advocate for herself, ask questions, and participate in her care without being considered rude.
I wanted to let you know about my daughter’s experience this past weekend. My daughter is not a new patient at this hospital at all. She has had many admissions for her asthma and allergies. However, she is 18 now and was initially seen in the Peds ED where she received great care. The Peds ED team was, as usual excellent! She has been there on many occasions and feels very comfortable there.
Unfortunately, this reaction was by far the worst one she has ever had and it required that she be placed on an Epi drip for her anaphylaxis. This was new for her. She was also getting admitted as an adult for the first time since she is now 18 years old. We had been dreading the day she went to the adult side for admission because we knew this scared her greatly. This time was to be her first. Well, we could not have asked for a more kind, gentle, caring group of people to care for her as she transitioned to the MICU.
Gaby was her nurse, and their expertise, along with their compassion and their bedside manner, was by far the best I have ever seen in all my years in the nursing profession. I have worked with many great nurses over the years, and Gaby is at the top. Gaby took the time to explain to A that she is able to advocate for herself, ask questions, and participate in her care without being considered rude. Gaby explained that A could help other patients by making sure she speaks up and asks questions or tells the staff what medications she cannot have, given her severe lactose allergy. Gaby is such an asset to the profession and the institution.
As a parent that is learning to allow my newly adult child to navigate and advocate for her care, it makes me feel at ease knowing there are nurses like Gaby that will help guide her as A takes the reigns. A was so scared, but once Gabby had a couple of hours with her, she said she was going to be okay on her own overnight. This was a first for both such a severe reaction and the first time going to the adult ICU. The entire team was excellent. The ED staff, the MICU staff, and everyone were great, but A wants to recognize Gaby most of all because they took the time and had the compassion A needed.
