Natali Fields has always exhibited the ability to go above and beyond for her patients. She knows what it means to go the extra mile. On Tuesday, I witnessed true nursing and a powerful expression of compassionate care. We received a trauma patient, 17 years old, and found ourselves on uncharted ground. Here was a young lady, needing a service that our Intensivist could not provide for her; she needed a pediatric intensivist with PALS certification. With limited resources and the immediate availability of a case manager, Natali began to perform her compassionate deed; she began to express her calling as a nurse. She began to call the nearest pediatric hospitals she could find while comforting the girl and her family in the process. Natali had come on the shift at 7am that morning and did not leave the unit until midnight. She had partaken in a task to get this girl the care she needed and she was there to see it through. After multiple hospitals had been notified, she finally located one that would accept the girl, Sacred Heart in Pensacola. I had left the hospital exchanging report with the nighttime clinical supervisor. The young lady had gone into respiratory distress in the midst of all this and Natali coordinated with anesthesia to get her intubated. I’m proud to call Natali a coworker and I’m always amazed at the way she cares for her patients, she is a nurse in the truest way you could ever represent this occupation. Thank you, Natali.
