Jordan took time out of her day to research and locate this program. She filled out paperwork for a translator to help with the language barrier and helped to comfort the family. She did not have to go the extra mile, but she took it upon herself to help a family in need while still thinking about the patient first.
I would like to nominate Jordan Holifield for her caring, compassionate, and empathetic nursing. I have worked with Jordan for at least 4 years now and have seen her bond and truly take care of not only her patients but also the patient’s families. This past week we admitted a transfer from an outside hospital for an oncology consult. Not only was he having to be 3 hours from his town, but he is Spanish speaking only, on the ventilator, and his family resides in Mexico. This patient was critical, and we were able to contact the family and get them here from Mexico. The issue we ran into was how his family had nothing, no transportation, no money, and no place to stay. We reached out to various departments, but all were unable to help at this time. Jordan reached out to the American Cancer Society who then got us in contact with the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Jordan was able to contact the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Susan Lang Pay-It-Forward Patient Travel Assistance Program. Jorden helped to coordinate someone to speak with the family and help them to understand what available support they have. The program now houses them at the Hope House and transports them to and from the hospital so they can participate in his plan of care daily. His family can see him and not have to worry about where to stay or how they will get around. Jordan took time out of her day to research and locate this program. I am so proud and lucky to work with nurses like Jordan who continuously touch people’s lives and help to ease the pain and uneasiness of seeing a loved one sick. Jordan is a rock star!
