Upon performing a routine assessment of a Veteran in the home, RN Solon was concerned about the Veteran’s depressed mood. The Veteran made a comment regarding suicide that was very concerning to RN Solon, especially since the Veteran's caregiver was not present during the visit. RN Solon reported the comments to the Veteran's provider per protocol but was still very concerned. RN Solon did not take the comments lightly and decided to take immediate action to ensure the Veteran's safety was a priority. RN Solon contacted additional family members and local officials, which led to the Veteran's ultimate admittance to the hospital, under direct one-on-one observation due to the safety concerns that were observed. RN Solon’s shift had ended, however, she remained past her tour of duty to ensure the Veteran was safe.

RN Solon’s display of the I-CARE values was on full display in the commitment and advocacy she displayed in taking care of the Veteran. These values prevented an otherwise dismal outcome, had she not been thoughtful and displayed excellence in Nursing Care. Because of RN Solon’s care and dedication, the Veteran is getting the care and treatment that is needed to promote a healthy and wholesome lifestyle.

RN Solon constantly displays the I-CARE values through the high moral principles of integrity, and how diligently she constantly advocates for each Veteran, by respecting their wishes and going above and beyond to ensure that the appropriate resources are readily available to serve the Veterans. RN Solon’s care is the standard on which nursing excellency should be modeled.
