She takes the time to get to know the patients. She takes the time to talk to them and their families. She puts people at ease and wins their confidence.
Wanda Prater LVN is the single most remarkable nurse that I have worked with in over 30 years of medical practice. I say that having practiced medicine inpatient outpatient and as a consultant. I've worked with dozens of very bright and dedicated nurses in that period of time but none match Wanda's dedication, work ethic, and compassion. Wanda sets herself apart by being singularly the most patient-oriented nurse I've worked with. She is very personable and develops a caring supportive relationship with all of our patients even the ones who are hard to get along with. She does the extra things like calling to check on them when they are ill, checking to make sure that they received their medications, and not having complications finding room on the clinic schedule to get patients in when they need to be seen (regardless of how full the schedule may be).
She takes the time to get to know the patients. She takes the time to talk to them and their families. She puts people at ease and wins their confidence. I could never list all of the little things that Wanda does every day for every patient but the impact of her dedication is obvious. Those patients are always more satisfied with the medical care that they've received they are less likely to be seen in emergency rooms and they are less likely to be readmitted to a hospital. Wanda is a difference-maker. She is a team player and has an incredible work ethic. She will skip lunch, stay late, work weekends, and do anything else that she thinks will help one of these patients. If we ever have an initiative that we want to start at the 5th Street Clinic we know that Wanda will be the nurse that can make things happen. Regardless of her workload she still seems to find extra time to do more.
She's an incredibly professional and phenomenal human being. I find myself in awe of her ability to work as hard as she does and still find the strength (and time) to be kind and offer a smile. They don't teach these things in nursing school. Wanda Prater is truly one in a million.
Note: This is Wanda's 2nd DAISY Award!
