Patients awaiting a heart transplant are encouraged to walk up to seven miles a day. Brenda’s efforts made it not only possible for the patient to do this, but also made it fun for him and the people he interacted with.
Brenda frequently cared for a wait-listed heart transplant, Impella patient. This patient was very personable and enjoyed interacting with the staff and other patients in the hospital. Leading up to Halloween, Brenda took the time to decorate his Impella pole with Halloween lights and decorations and helped acquire enough candy for the patient to regularly walk around the hospital and hand out candy to everyone he met. Patients awaiting a heart transplant are encouraged to walk up to seven miles a day. Brenda’s efforts made it not only possible for the patient to do this, but also made it fun for him and the people he interacted with. One day, during a walk, this patient made a joke that if he ever won the lottery, he would donate the money to Lutheran so they could build a walking track for patients like him. On the day of the next drawing, Brenda purchased this patient several lottery tickets. If he had won, he would have earned nearly 1 billion dollars. Not only did Brenda work consistently to keep this patient as ready for his transplant as possible, both physically and mentally, but when the patient received his new heart on Halloween day, Brenda came in on her day off to help readmit him after his surgery. Brenda is known for going above and beyond for her patients. This story is only one of many that show her heart of gold and commitment to the people under her care.
