Kelley took it upon herself to bathe the patient, and provided him with a clean gown and linens, prior to his transfer to the ICU.
I cannot express enough how tremendously fortunate 12NW was to have Kelley Wenger on their team this past Saturday. While orienting a new CSO RN herself, Kelley made herself available to the rest of the RNs who were juggling heavy assignments. Amongst the already high acuity of the unit, Kelley stepped up to help one nurse in particular who was struggling with an acutely sick child needing transfer to the ICU.

Kelley saw the opportunity to engage her orientee in some new clinical skills and offered to help the patient's nurse gather labs and a urine culture. Not only did this alleviate some tasks from the bedside RN, but Kelley was also able to step into a stressful situation and provide an opportunity for learning. As Kelley was wrapping up with her orientee, she noticed the patient, who was alone at the time, appeared sweaty and disheveled from having broken multiple fevers over the course of the shift. Kelley took it upon herself to bathe the patient, and provided him with a clean gown and linens, prior to his transfer to the ICU. Her compassion and fresh perspective helped to give this patient some peace and comfort during a time when much of the staff was distracted by his changing clinical status. She stayed with the patient, assured his safety, and also provided him with her exceptional bedside manner and care.

While the patient's bedside RN began to prepare the transfer, Kelley assisted with gathering equipment and patient belongings. While en route to the ICU, the patient suffered an acute decompensation during which Kelley stepped up and took the lead in helping the patient arrive at the ICU safely. She provided the emergent interventions needed and demonstrated clear communication during an urgent time. She supported her colleagues well during this stressful transfer and ensured the patient received the appropriate and best care. 12NW is so thankful for the exceptional, above-and-beyond actions of Kelley this past weekend. While she always demonstrates clinical excellence and professionalism, no one could have possibly rocked the ICARE values better than she did. It is also a pleasure to have her join our team, even if just for a few hours.
