Betsy is not only an expert clinician, but a compassionate leader who took a deep breath, dug in with both feet, and rallied her staff. She stands beside them, guiding, advocating, and supporting them the entire way through these trying times.
Betsy cares deeply about her employees, her unit, and her patients. She works tirelessly to advocate for everyone in her charge. Recent changes to the management structure, coupled with the E.D. holds, staffing shortages, and patient influxes have strained everyone, including UPMC Passavant. Betsy is not only an expert clinician, but a compassionate leader who took a deep breath, dug in with both feet, and rallied her staff. She stands beside them, guiding, advocating, and supporting them the entire way through these trying times.
Betsy has embraced the values of being a nurse and a leader. She is driven by helping people, by helping herself. She has climbed the ranks from EMS to staff nurse, educator, manager, and most recently, director of emergency services. Each step of her journey was bolstered by her own successes in education and certification, attaining her DNP, Pre-hospital certifications, CEN, and Nurse Executive, advanced!
Betsy is always present and approachable to her staff. It is not uncommon to see her on the floor making rounds with them. She shares the vision of bettering oneself and gives her staff the opportunity to do so. Advocating for more education and certifications. She uses her position and education for the benefit of the staff and the hospital. She makes time for her people that need help, a hand, or just someone to talk to, for whatever circumstance. She expertly collaborates with the physicians, providers, and administration to attain the goals of the unit in what is best for the patients and staff. She also uses innovative methods for traversing the E.D. backlog, called the PIT (provider in triage). The staff has embraced this process as it keeps the flow of patients moving. She has also begun using paramedics in the E.D. to perform PIT tasks up to their skill level as designated by the Department of Health.
Betsy is the epitome of a nurse. She is proud to be a nurse and advocates not only striving for excellence for herself but for her staff as well. She has taught college-level programs and given numerous lectures to many separate organizations. She was instrumental in the sepsis protocol that the hospital now uses and initiated an advanced life support response unit to augment the EMS systems in our area. These are just a few of the notable list of accomplishments that Betsy has achieved in her career.
