I’m a patient who underwent extensive surgery at Mayo Clinic in early October. During my hospital stay, one nurse in particular stuck out to me and was exceptional at her job. Nurse Gabby went beyond her normal duties to care for me. She wasn’t just task-focused and quick to get things done. She was brilliant and present in the moment. Gabby made me feel comfortable and heard. She took the time to know me more as a person, not just as a patient. Gabby was not only very personable, but she also had great skill and knowledge. One night before I got into bed she noticed something was wrong with one of my many drains from surgery. She took the time to change my dressings again and safely secure each drain to my gown. Throughout the rest of the weekend, she continued to be kind and patient. Gabby quickly learned my routine and did things without me even having to ask! My room was always tidied up and organized by her every evening. She brought a smile to my face each night she cared for me. Being in the hospital again made me quite anxious. Because of Gabby’s extraordinary personality and compassion, I was able to overcome my emotions of fear. I am so grateful and anyone would be blessed to have Ms. Gabby as their nurse in the ICU!
