Without any hesitation, she volunteered to be the one to "cuddle" the patient inside the MRI machine so we could get a successful scan.
This nurse is consistently one of the most compassionate nurses I have had the privilege of working with. She was the very first person to welcome me and no matter how swamped she may get, her positive attitude and love/empathy for her patients never falter. But today I watched her go above and beyond in a way that I have never seen from a nurse, and in a way, I doubt most nurses would do.
We have a chronic Pedi patient. All day long, I have watched her treat this patient while they have been experiencing a hypertensive crisis with a calm and knowledgeable demeanor, while effectively communicating with physicians and the patient's parents along the way. Our patient's symptoms worried the care team that something is wrong, so an MRI was ordered. After she got the call to bring our patient to MRI, she immediately went to speak with the family. Moments later, Mindi came to find me with the plan of her carrying the patient while I pushed the two of them in a wheelchair, when I agreed she picked up our patient and we were on our way. She talked to and soothed the patient the entire time, understanding that they did not feel well and were most likely scared. Upon arrival to MRI, the tech was worried about how we would be able to get a scan done, and without any hesitation, she volunteered to be the one to "cuddle" the patient inside the MRI machine so we could get a successful scan. After completely emptying her pockets and confirming that she had no metal in her body she walked into MRI zone IV, helped secure the patient to the table, put on headphones, and laid on the MRI table with the patient while cradling their head. She remained inside the MRI machine with the patient for the duration of the scan, keeping them totally still and calm which allowed the scan to be completed fast and with fantastic images.
She is a super-nurse with a huge heart that invariably demonstrates the values of a DAISY Nurse and of a BayCare employee. While I am always impressed with the care she gives to her patients, today she was extra special, and I wholeheartedly believe she is a DAISY Nurse.
