My 80-year old mother has been in and out of the hospital since July due to advanced cancer, colostomy issues and heart problems. After having major surgery recently, she had to return back to the hospital and she was convinced that this was the end. She was very scared. Fortunately for my mother, she was placed under the care of Jose Bueno Ventura, an exceptional nurse. He treated my mother with the utmost respect and dignity. As she complained repeatedly, he compassionately laid his hand on her arm and validated her anger and frustration. He narrated his every move, explaining to my Mom what he was doing, and why. He listened to her every word, never rushed her, and attended to her with such dedication. I personally have a daughter with a severe syndrome and deal with hospitals and home nursing around the clock. I know that nursing is changing, and less and less people are going into such a critical field. I truly believe that Jose is sharing his gift of compassion with us by choosing this much needed path. When I asked Jose how long he had been a nurse, he told me 3 years and I could not help but reflect on what these last three years have been like for nurses! In spite of this, Jose’s spirit seemed like it could not be better. I know that nurses get a lot of complaints, and people are so quick to point out what this world is doing wrong, which is why I wanted you to know that Jose is clearly doing what he was meant to do with his life. His sincere words and actions touched me, and regardless of my mother’s outcome, he made me feel as though she was not only given the best care, but the very highest respect. I hope that more and more people get to witness first-hand, Jose’s kindness. He has so much to teach this world.
