Brandy was nominated by a patient who was on vacation and woke up with severe eye pain. After receiving care for the eye, the patient was waiting to be discharged when Brandy asked more questions. From the patient: Brandy took my pulse and then checked and rechecked it and asked me, 'Do you always have a slow pulse? She put me on the monitor and the doctor arrived and asked me some questions and advised me that I should see my primary care physician ASAP and that if I developed any symptoms, I should return to the Emergency Department.  Within a few days, I had an EKG, lab work, Holter monitor, and a cardiology appointment. I am fortunately doing well, yet without Brandy's expert skills and attention to detail, I would never have known that I had any cardiac abnormalities. I know how busy it has been in the emergency departments, and it would have been very easy for her to simply pass over a low pulse for a patient who was presenting with a minor eye infection. Brandy demonstrated compassion, and attention to detail and truly went above and beyond. I was fortunate to have Brandy as a nurse. The nurses in the Emergency Department have a really tough role, and I know that Mayo Clinic Health System — especially in Northwest Wisconsin — has amazing nurses and staff.  Brandy later stated "I was in complete shock when I received the award. We work so hard every day taking care of patients and to receive a genuine thank-you from a patient was so rewarding. It's something I will never forget."
