I have no doubt in my mind that Rachel saved my husband's life, and I am forever grateful to her.
My husband was admitted to the MSICU in septic shock. The decision was made to place him on a ventilator. As I sat by his bedside, I could hear the commotion behind me as they prepared the staff and supplies needed to intubate my husband. During this time, I heard a strong self-assured voice say, "I've clocked in, I'm ready, let's go!" When I turned towards that voice that is the first time, I laid eyes on Rachel. Little did I know then the impact this confident nurse would have on my family. I left the MSICU and stood alone crying in the hallway while the medical staff placed my husband on the ventilator. I was allowed to return to his bedside a short time later. As I entered my husband's room (still in tears) I noticed that the same nurse with the confident self-assured voice was at my husband's bedside. The nurse quickly introduced herself to me as Rachel and said that she would be caring for him that day. Rachel noticed that I was in tears and asked if it would be ok if she gave me a hug. Honestly, a hug was just what I needed at that time. Rachel then explained everything that was going on with my husband. Rachel worked nonstop that shift to save my husband's life. I was so impressed with how swiftly Rachel titrated IV drips, started dialysis, and adjusted ventilator settings as needed. Rachel worked in such a calm confident manner. Rachel always explained to me what was going on and she most importantly talked to my husband throughout the shift and let him know what she was doing to care for him. Once my children arrived at my husband's bedside, Rachel explained everything to them as well. Luckily for my husband and family, Rachel was my husband's nurse for the next four days as well. During this time Rachel was so kind, caring, and compassionate. We also got to realize that Rachel is funny as well. You know sometimes a little humor is what is needed to make it through a stressful day! Rachel always made sure I was included in bedside medical rounds. Rachel made sure all my questions or concerns were addressed. Rachel prompted the medical team to explain things to me that they were discussing during the planning of care. Rachel always managed her peers and would tell me how great the nurses were and assured me they would take excellent care of my husband. My husband was in the MSICU for three weeks and was on a ventilator for two out of those three weeks. Throughout his stay in the MSICU, Rachel always made it a point to come to check on him and my family. Rachel truly gave us hope when we ourselves felt hopeless. Rachel is such a caring, confident, and compassionate nurse. I have no doubt in my mind that Rachel saved my husband's life, and I am forever grateful to her. I can never thank Rachel enough for her kindness, compassion, wit, and the exemplary nursing care that she provided to my husband and family. I can think of no nurse that is more worthy of being honored by the prestigious DAISY award.
